SYNOPSYS

In Indonesia, burying the umbilical cord of a newborn baby is a custom which has been passed down for generations. Many people are not aware of the health benefits behind an umbilical cord. Umbilical cord blood is a rich source of stem cells, or master cells, that able to recreate body cells. The stem cells can be transplanted in the owners’ body if someday they suffer illness which need cell transplantation.

Therefore in our show “Health and Beyond: Benefits Behind Cord Blood”, we going to discuss further the benefits inside cord blood with health experts. The objective is to widened the viewers’ point of view about the technology.

RESEARCH FILE

What is cord blood?
Cord blood, which is also called “placental blood,” is the blood that remains in the umbilical cord and placenta following birth and after the cord is cut. Cord blood is routinely discarded with the placenta and umbilical cord. The baby’s umbilical cord blood is a valuable source of stem cells, which are genetically unique to your baby and family.

What are stem cells and how are they used?
Stem cells are the body’s “master” cells because they create all other tissues, organs, and systems in the body. The stem cells found in cord blood are the building blocks of your blood and immune system and most readily replicate into:
Red Blood Cells – which carry oxygen to all the cells in the body,
White Blood Cells – which fight infection, and
Platelets – which aid in clotting in the event of injury.

The ability of cord blood stem cells to differentiate, or change into other types of cells in the body is a new discovery that holds significant promise for improving the treatment of some of the most common diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and Alzheimer’s.
Currently, stem cells are primarily used in transplant medicine to regenerate a patient’s blood and immune system after they have been treated with chemotherapy and/or radiation to destroy cancer cells.
At the same time the chemotherapy and radiation destroys the cancer cells in a patient, they also destroy stem cells. Therefore, an infusion of stem cells or a stem cell transplant is performed after the chemotherapy and/or radiation treatment. The stem cells then migrate to the patient’s bone marrow where they multiply and regenerate all of the cells to create a new blood and immune system for the patient.
The promise of using stem cells for medical treatments has been the focus of research projects that are showing encouraging results.
• Cord blood stem cells are showing significant promise in a new field of treatment called regenerative medicine, which is focusing on treatments for diseases and injuries such as juvenile diabetes and brain injury.
• They have also proven their ability to turn into blood vessel cells, which could some day benefit treatments for heart disease, allowing patients to essentially “grow their own bypass.”

What are the reasons doctors may choose cord blood ?
• When your doctor searches the Be The Match Registry, he or she will choose the best cell source for you. That may be marrow or peripheral blood from an adult donor or it may be a cord blood unit. A doctor might choose cord blood because of some of the ways it differs from marrow or peripheral blood.
• More tolerant matching
• A close match between the patient and the donor or cord blood unit can improve a patient’s outcome after transplant. Even though a closely matched cord blood unit is preferred, clinical studies suggest the match may not have to be as close as is needed for marrow or peripheral blood transplants. If you have an uncommon tissue type, your doctor may not find a closely matched adult donor for you. However, a cord blood unit may be an option.
• More quickly available
• Cord blood units are stored and ready to use. It can take two months or more to find an unrelated marrow or peripheral blood donor. A cord blood unit can be selected and delivered to the transplant center in less than two weeks. Your doctor may choose cord blood if you need a transplant quickly.
• Less graft-versus-host disease
• Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a common complication after an allogeneic transplant (which uses cells from a family member, unrelated donor or cord blood unit). GVHD can range from mild to life-threatening. Studies have found that after a cord blood transplant, fewer patients get GVHD than after marrow or peripheral blood transplants. Patients in the studies who did get GVHD after a cord blood transplant tended to get less severe cases.

Fourth Segment

Conclusion of the interview from the host: Cord blood has many benefits and able to cure different types of diseases such as leukemia and thalasemia. It also has no side effects, neither from the extracting process nor the usage of the Cord Blood itself. The biggest advantage is, interestingly, the Cord Blood can be used not only for your children. It can be used for your partners, relatives and parents, although the level of success is different. This is an opportunity for only once in a life time. So, if you are about to give birth and believe that this Cord Blood will be very useful, then you can decide to save your baby’s cord blood. If you need any further information about where to store cord blood, you can contact our hotline service to Health and Beyond as you can see below your screen.
Time goes by so fast and we have reached our 30 minutes of time.

Closing by host: “Thank you Mrs. Hilda for accompanying me to gave information to the viewers. Hope it will be useful for everybody who is watching this show.
Ladies and Gentlemen, this is Fransiska for Health and Beyond. Don’t forget to keep watching our show which will present more health topics. Thank you and see you again.”

B. Script of The Video Tape of process of saving umbilical cord

The cord blood bank which located in Pulomas area, develop the cord blood processing system. The cord blood is extracted from a newborn baby. Most people bury their babies’ cord and placenta. This laboratory has been officiated by Indonesia’s minister of Health in 2007, and it has another offices and laboratories in svevral countries other than Indonesia, like Singapore, Australia, Hongkong, Thailand, and many more. This cord blood bank is commited to use cord blood as a medicine to cure many kinds if deadly disease, like leukemia.

In less than 48 hours time, blood which came from the clients will be processed in the laboratory to acquire the stem cell within the cord blood. Then the stem cell will be frozen and stored in a pro hygienic temperature. The plasma and red blood cells will be taken away. The purpose of the process is to revolve the blood. Red blood cells as the one that has the most weight, stem cells as the second, and the plasma as the lightest.

Just as the world standard, the stored blood must be free of contagious diseases, like HIV, syphilis, Hepatitis B and C. The blood also must be free of germs and molds. However, here is a possibility that the blood will still be stored although it is positively contaminated, which is with the added consent from the client.

C. Script of The Video Tape of people’s opinion about umbilical cord

Ms. Hilda: A long time ago, we use umbilical cord to cure a fever. It was dried, and when somebody got sick, it was soaked into water, which will be drunk by the child. With this new technology I have just heard, the cord blood can be stored in a bank or somewhere. However, it is very expensive. With more reasonable price, more people will be able to use the technology.

Anya: As far as I know, placenta is used for cosmetics. After further studies, my religion does not allow it. In my opinion, the technology development is getting better each day, but it has to be examined further based on my religion, whether is it good or bad, “haram” or “hallal”.

Ida: When my second child was born, my mother in law told me to not throw it (umbilical cord) away. She said it can be used for medicine. It has to be carefully stored, wrapped in cotton and white cloth. When the child is sick, it can be soaked into water and let the child drink it. It could cure fever and cough.

Mona: About umbilical cord, before I gave birth I have done a small research. I found out that it can cure diseases on siblings or…. But for adults, the amount of cord blood is not enough to cure the disease. That is first. Second, the storing still cost a lot of money. If calculated, the possibility for a long term might be good. But for short term or in recent time, it still needs a further and longer research.
